Criminal System

In looking at the criminal system in New York, you’ll find that it’s the court that actually handles things like misdemeanors, arraignments, and minor felony cases.  The court also takes care of criminal motions together with some jury trials.  Whenever there are cases that are classified as felony cases, they’re referred to the Supreme Court of the state.  Essentially, when you speak about the criminal court of the city, you’re referring to entry level courts that handle criminal cases and it covers all the five boroughs of the city.

With regard to the judges making decisions in the criminal system in New York, they are appointed by the major of the New York.  They fulfill a 10 year term of serving the people and the city.  Aside from being responsible with interpreting the law and having to sit in criminal court, these judges are also designed acting justices for the New York State Supreme Court.  Delving further into how the criminal system works in New York, any kind of misdemeanor is heard in the criminal court.  There are some traffic infractions as well.  When it comes to arraignment of people accused of felonies, this is where their cases are handled.

If someone is arrested and prosecuted in the city, they will have to appear before the criminal court to be arraigned.  For the time being, they’ll be detained in a holding cell in located in the courtroom.  In the city of New York, there are a lot of people.  In a single day, you can guess that the criminal court takes care of a hundred arraignments and they never close due to the large volume of arrests.  You can assume then that the criminal system in New York has to be very tight about its laws and it has to be very strict.
